ALEMANYS 5

It isn't every day that you can lock yourself away surrounded by a former Roman wall in a medieval city and find yourself in an impressive rural house. This is exactly what we experienced when we spent a few nights in the palatial, warm, rustic yet beautifully balanced Alemanys 5, in Girona, Spain. Aptly named after the street, this house has been creatively split into apartments, giving guests the option to rent the property in its entirety or the two individual apartment themselves.

Anna Noguera, a renown architect with a rather impressive body of work and her husband Juan who is responsible for the amazing hospitality, initially embarked on this project when they decided to buy a vacation house. After much hard graft, renovations and all the challenges that one would expect when converting a 500-year-old house into something that will work for families, couples and groups alike of the 21st century - Alemanys 5 was complete.

OUR STORY

Wooden flooring flank the breadth of this property and everything is eloquently juxtaposed. Take for instance the stone wall counter-balanced with the modern lines of high-end furniture and that curved lamp that frames the dining area to almost make a picture. The clutter-free space is a fair testament to minimalism and practicality, with pockets of space dedicated to functionality and essentials, yet all neatly tucked away. Sliding floor to ceiling doors allow you to open up spaces for social purposes or retire quietly when you want to get away. El Jardin ( The Garden) is 90m2 on the lower floor and has a luscious green garden with a seating area for alfresco dining and good times and you can also dip your toes on warm nights, in the pool at the end of the lawn.

The upper apartment El Badiu (The Veranda), is 180m2 split between two levels and boasts views of Girona city and elegantly allows the kitchen area to merge with the terrace, thanks to its use of glass and positioning. It is a beautiful oasis that demonstrates a labour of love. Extra services such as private chef, excursions and private tours can all be arranged by contacting Juan in advance.
